Everything you need to know about social media image sizes

Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, oh my! With the ever-changing social media landscape, it can be tough to keep up, let alone know where to start. Our recommendation? Start with the proper social media image sizes.

The visual identity of your brand is often the first thing your audience sees, and possibly the only thing they will remember. It’s important to make sure those images are sharp, high-quality, and sized properly to leave an outstanding first impression. 

Here’s everything you need to know about the proper image sizes for all your favourite social media platforms. All image dimensions are in pixels, width x height. Click on the name of the social network you’re working with to jump to that section of the guide and get started:

Facebook

Profile Photo:

  • Must be at least 180 x 180 pixels
  • Photo will appear on page as 170 x 170 pixels on desktop, 128x128 on smartphones
  • Your photo thumbnail will appear throughout Facebook at 32 x 32 pixels
  • On your personal profile, it will be fit into a circle
  • For your business page, the photo will be cropped into a square

Cover Photo:

  • Appear on page at 820 x 312 pixels (anything less will be stretched)
  • Minimum size of 400 x 150 pixels
  • Displays as 640 x 360 on smartphones
  • For best results, upload an sRGB JPG file of less than 100 KB
  • Images with logo or text work best as PNG files
  • *Business accounts are the same as personal accounts

Event Image:

  • Facebook will scale down to minimum dimensions, which are 470 x 174
  • Shows in feed as 470 x 174 pixels

Shared Post Image:

  • Recommended size of 1200 x 630 pixels
  • This image will appear in your feed at a max width of 470 pixels, and will scale to a max of 1:1
  • If you share a link, the preview image will appear at 1200 x 620 pixels

Twitter

Profile Photo:

  • Square images of 400 x 400 pixels are recommended
  • Maximum file size is 2 MB
  • Image types include: JPG, GIF, or PNG
  • Displays at 200 x 200 pixels

Header Photo:

  • Recommended 1500 x 500 pixels
  • Maximum file size of 5 MB
  • Image types include: JPG, GIF, or PNG

Shared Post Image:

  • Minimum 440 x 220 pixels a 2:1 ratio
  • Maximum file size of 5 MB for photos and GIFs on mobile; 15 MB on web

Instagram

Profile Photo:

  • Appear on your profile at 110 x 110 pixels
  • Square photo: make sure to maintain an aspect ratio of 1:1

Photo Thumbnails:

  • Will appear on the page at 161 x 161 pixels
  • Square photo: make sure to keep aspect ratio of 1:1

LinkedIn

Company Logo Image:

  • Recommended 300 x 300 pixels
  • Maximum 4MB (square layout)
  • Image types include: JPG, GIF, or PNG

Square Logo:

  • Appears when your company is being searched
  • 60 x 60 pixels
  • Maximum 2MB
  • Image types include: JPG, GIF, or PNG

Company Cover Image:

  • Recommended between 1536 x 768 pixels
  • Minimum size of 1192  x 220 pixels
  • Maximum 4MB
  • Appears as 1400 x 425 pixels
  • Image types include: JPG, GIF, or PNG

Banner Image:

  • Minimum 646 x 220 pixels
  • Maximum 2MB
  • Landscape layout
  • Image types include: JPG, GIF, or PNG

Hero Image:

  • Appears on Career Opportunities page
  • Recommended 1128 x 376 pixels
  • Maximum 2MB
  • Landscape layout
  • Image types include: JPG, GIF, or PNG

Shared Image:

  • Recommended size 1200 x 628 pixels
  • Appears at 552 x 289 pixels
  • Image types include: JPG, JPG or GIF

Google Business Profile

Posts:

  • Images appear in a 4:3 ratio (you can crop your image once you upload it, so make sure to preview before you publish)
  • Minimum resolution of 720 x 540 pixels
  • Image types include: JPG or PNG
